State Status of
Electricity Deregulation
Regardless of the status of your state’s deregulation program,
businesses are urged to contact APPI to discuss energy management
services, electricity tariff audits, and to prepare for upcoming
electricity opportunities.
Electricity deregulation is
accomplished on a state-by-state basis. There is no federal
legislation mandating deregulation. States with electricity “choice”
program are:
Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, New
York, Texas, and Washington DC
Deregulation is completed. There is active competition among
electricity suppliers. Savings negotiated by APPI for all types of
businesses range from 5% to 50%
Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, and New Jersey
Deregulation is completed. There is active competition among
electricity suppliers for large businesses and industrials. Savings
negotiated by APPI range from 5% to 50%.
Pennsylvania
Deregulation is completed. Competitive pricing is available in the
Duquesne and Penn Power service territories.
Arizona, New Hampshire, Oregon, Ohio, and Virginia
Deregulation has been implemented, but savings are currently limited
due to the lack of a competitive market.
California
Deregulation fully implemented, but as of September 2001 retail choice
was suspended until further notice. However, businesses currently
served by suppliers other than PGE, SOCAL Edison, and San Diego Gas &
Electric, can continue to be active in the competitive market.
Arkansas, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma
Deregulation legislation is currently pending. No dates have been set.
Remaining states are in the process of legislative investigation with no specific plans.
